RE: Tow Vehicle w/ Best Back Seat for Passengers - Ram Mega Cab?

The OP is considering a Mega Cab because the rear seats recline in which non of the other crew cab rear seats do this. This answers the OPs question. Bed length and having the individual with a bad back ride up front wasn’t ever asked (lots of folks prefer a short bed - just look at the overall sales numbers). I have a buddy with two very tall special needs kids. They have tried the regular crew cabs and they sing the praises of the Mega for long cross country runs. Really isn’t any arguing if cab size and reclining rear seats in a HD is a deciding factor, none of the crew cabs compare.

RE: New and Old Skins

I’m always surprised at how many miles some can get out of tires on a HD. I’ve never got more than 40k from a set. Sometimes as little as 18,000 miles (I think those were Yokohamas and I got credit for them). New truck came with Firestones. I like how quiet they are but I already have 13,000 miles (almost all towing something). They won’t last another 13,000 miles. I’ll look for a tire with tread mile warranty when I replace them if I can find it, but I also want to go up in size to fill up the wheel wells better, and those tires don’t usually come with any treadlife warranty. As far as buying from Costco, I did that a year ago on my Expedition (those tires only lasted 40k as well). Never again. They had the best price but discount would have matched them. Service has been terrible - everything from getting them installed to rotation. They are just way under staffed at the two close to me. I’ll go back to Discount for future purchases.

RE: Ford 7.3 engine users?

There isn’t a hill I’ve been on that I would be afraid to descend pulling a 16000 lb rv with the 7.3 gasser. Low gear and 6000 rpm is a lot of engine braking. You are a brave lad !!! Can't argue the fact of what a 7.3 gasser will ,or will not do , but I towed a fairly heavy fifth wheel many years with a 7.3 Powerstroke , no EB . Had a few white knuckle experiences coming of some of the hills in Utah, Idaho ,and Montana . Yes learned pretty quickly on how to come down some of those long grades . One example is the one coming from Ennis,MT to Virginia City , MT. It has the runaway ramp if needed . There's no comparison of the 7.3 Gas with a throttle body, and transmission grade braking compared to a 7.3PSD that has absolutely no grade braking functions. Bottom line...I'll take a 7.3 Gas over a 7.3PSD anyday for all towing applications. I will take a 6.7 Cummins over both of them for all tow applications . So what are your impressions on driving a 7.3 gas truck? I driven two different 2022 350 Superduty Laraits 6.7 Powerstrokes 10 speeds, one a friends ,and one my sons . Impression ,okay . As far as ride ,and handling I prefer my 2014 Ram 6.7 Cummins Laramie Megacab . I drove my friends Larait around 90 miles , up Parleys ,and Daniels Canyons here in Utah , both good grades , ran well . Not towing so very hard to compare there ,but obviously a 2022 6.7 Powerstroke is going to pull those canyons very well towing . My 2014 will pull those same canyons the speed limit 65 on both towing , so as far as towing the new Powerstroke has no advantage over the 2014 Ram I have, and the "TOWING I DO " . To answer your question ,first I have no impressions about the 7.3 gas truck , but I am sure it would give me the same impression as any other 350 Superduty ,I prefer the handing ,and comfort of a Ram truck . There is one thing I like about a ford truck compared to the Ram ,and that is the mirrors , sure not enough to switch back . I have driven the new 2022 Ram 3500 Laramie my other son has , those new Fords IMO have nothing over on the Ram truck . I have driven nothing but Ford trucks since my first new one in 93. I recently started to look for a new truck I decided to also look at the Chevy and at the Ram. I really did'nt care for the looks of the Chevy so that was out quick, I liked the looks of the Ram and when I drove it I was impressed with the ride and the comfort of it. The 6.7 has a sound of it's own and the exhaust brake is the best of them all hands down. The mirrors on the 23 Ram in my opinion are as good or better than the Superduty mirrors, and the Ram has power adjust convex mirrors. Im sure you can tell by now that I ended up buying the Ram. So far I am very happy with it. My sons 2022 Ram 3500 is very impressive . He said it had power mirrors ,but I thought they were the same as my 2014, I didn't pay that much attention . Possibly the 2023 are different ? Even after driving the two 2022 Superduty's ,and getting back in my 2014 Ram ,like you ride ,and handling just seemed better . New mirrors came on the 23s not the 22s. I’m still getting used to them.

RE: I'm curious to know what you would do?

Since you asked "what would you do", I'd also be in the Option 3 category - keep what you have. I used to be a new every year/every other year guy. But that was a long time ago. Brand new every year just isn't important to me, especially in current times with high interest rates (assuming you are financing that type of purchase). If you do go new, I'm curious as to your report of how much seat of the pants difference the HO engine makes over the standard.

RE: Best navigation app when towing a 5th wheel

Just an observation, but not all apps are compatible with CarPlay. I’d make sure whatever you are leaving to is, otherwise it won’t come up on your screen. Personally I just use either Waze or Apple Maps. Sure it doesn’t warn about low overhangs, but I can only think of a small handful of apps laces where that is an issue and there are always ample warnings before you would reach that obstacle.

RE: Car Play for tow vehicles

I am wanting to get Car Play for my 2013 GMC truck but am clueless as to what to get... Get a new stereo (head unit). This. In my 2012 I went with a new Pioneer head unit. It had wireless CarPlay (which is really nice). Also gave me a much better back up camera, and you have the options of more cameras should you so choose. Best Buy often offers free install with purchase.

RE: A.R.E. Camper Shells

I’ve had 3 ARE toppers. It was happy with all of them for including my current one. Sorry you are having trouble but I agree you’d be more likely to receive satisfaction by contacting your dealer than ranting here.

RE: Truck was totaled, looking at GM 6.6 Gasser

Congrats on the new truck. I was just out at a friends ranch. They have switched from running Ford/RAM diesels to GM gassers mainly due to availability issues. Right now they have 4 6.6 gassers. Two with the old 6 speed that they don’t really like and two with the 10 speed that they do like. The new tranny makes a huge difference in drive ability.

RE: Denver and surrounding areas

If you’re looking at State Parks, you HAVE TO reserve 6 months to the day in advance. Otherwise good luck. Cherry Creek and Chatfield are your best options close to Centennial.

RE: DEF fluid

DEF is DEF. I don't spend more for the Blue. I either get it from Walmart, or from the pumps at a truck stop (I like Maverick). If you buy it at Walmart (or anywhere) I'd look for the expiration label. From what I have read, expired DEF won't hurt your engine, but you will use more.

Echoing the chorus of don’t trust the sensors. They are never accurate. When I had the pyramid of poo I used rid-x.

RE: 2024 Chevy HD DRW and SRW Fuel Economy Test

And at the end of the day it actually matters, why? You drive the speed and style that you drive and unless you’re already drivin miss daisy, you drive slower if you want to use less fuel. And you drive faster if you don’t care and want to get there sooner. Because you want to know if driving miss daisy is saving you enough money to make the extra time, aggravation, and road rage incidents worth it. If it's only saving you $10/month, stomp on the skinny pedal and keep up with traffic. This seems pretty reasonable to me. I’ve bumped up my towing speed as the trade off of MPG vs MPH is worth it for me after I calculated it.

RE: 2024 Chevy HD DRW and SRW Fuel Economy Test

What really burns my arse is when I come over a hill with 115,000 lbs in tow to find a flipping Tesla putzing along at 80 kph in the slow lane on a busy 110 kph highway. What do you do? There's people doing 125 in the fast lane so getting over to the left is not going to work; Could slam on the brakes and burn three weeks wages off the brake linings and another days wages of diesel lugging the load back up the hill trying to get back to speed if you ever get a chance to get around the pesky savior of mother earth. I could just come flying up behind the cursed Tesla with the air horn blaring knowing full well it is capable of hitting 80 mph in about 1/2 of second. I could pass her on the right hand shoulder and hopefully teach her a lesson. I guess I should be more sympathetic ... after all she needs to make it from Edmonton to Calgary on one a single charge so she's only doing what she's got to do. I think you need a snickers…..

RE: Wireless bluetooth thermometers?

Well, Thank you all for the suggestions and clarifications on what I actually need. I just ordered the Waggle lite thermometer on Amazon Prime. Paid $129.99 and its scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I'll check back after our trip next week with how well it worked. Thanks again. FWIW, Walmart has them on sale for $99.

^^^ That is impressive but I have no idea how to so and don't want or care to understand how to do so. ^^^ Fill to top. Next time fill to top. Now divide my gallons into miles = GOLDEN Download the Fuelly app. Really couldn’t be any easier.

RE: 2023 F350 6.7 HO Towing 10k lb Review

I don’t know what the threshold for temps that will damage gaskets/fluids/transmission is, but it certainly is FAR north of 200*. The only vehicle I’ve driven that kept temps well below 200* is my 2023 RAM/Aisin. All others saw 200 regularly. My 2022 Grand Cherokee was at 196 yesterday in the city and my 2019 Expedition was at 205 this afternoon. I can probably show a 230 photo next week after pulling my boat through the Colorado mountains. https://i.imgur.com/4gAgrtYl.jpg

RE: 2023 F350 6.7 HO Towing 10k lb Review

My 68RFE regularly saw temps above 200*. 220* was pretty common for me. Must be that Amsoil fluid that keeps yours so cool. You mean this Amsoil fluid and his aftermarket finned oil pan. We know all about it. :B https://i.imgur.com/tSWA7dRl.jpg Must have been very impressed to save that pic! Or he forgot it was a simple gasket that failed, like many do at times before the REST of the unit fails! Marty Isn’t that a phot or the pan on his 68RFE? Back when he considered that a great transmission?
